From Connecticut to the Douro Valley: Angelo’s D7 Visa Story

Angelo spent his career as a teacher in Connecticut. When he retired, he didn’t want Lisbon or the Algarve. He wanted a small town with a slower pace, and he found one in Lamego, in the hills above the Douro valley.

He went to his D7 appointment at VFS New York on 7 July 2026. By early October his visa was approved.

VFS New York does a few things differently from other US centres. Here’s how his application went.

A straightforward D7, on paper

Angelo applied alone, with no dependents. His income is his teaching pension, with Social Security starting in January 2026. That’s exactly the kind of steady, passive income the D7 is designed for, and our first document review confirmed his means were more than enough.

He started in September 2025 with his NIF and a Portuguese bank account, then took our Premium visa package a couple of weeks later.

The letter, from four bullet points

Every D7 file needs a cover letter explaining who you are and why you’re moving. Angelo sent us four bullet points about his plans, and our team turned them into the full letter. He didn’t change a word.

Finding a flat in a small town

He found his flat himself, on Idealista: a 12-month lease in Lamego. Our partner lawyer reviewed it. The term was fine, and the one thing to check was that the landlord registers the lease with the tax office. VFS wants that proof, not just the signed contract.

Smaller towns are often easier on rent than Lisbon or Porto, and a long lease is simpler to arrange there too.

The bank account, signed in person

Opening a Portuguese account from abroad means signing forms and posting originals. Angelo signed at the branch in Lamego instead. The bank opened the account and set up the app on the same visit.

When the FBI record expires

His FBI background check was from September 2025. A criminal record certificate for the visa is generally only accepted if it’s recent, usually within 90 days of the application, so by the time his appointment came round it was too old.

He ordered a new one in April 2026. You don’t have to fly back to the US for this: some services take your fingerprints in Portugal and send the apostilled FBI record to your US address. His took about three weeks.

If you’re applying from the US, time the FBI check to your appointment, not to when you start.

He kept his passport after the appointment, and mailed it in only once the visa was approved.

Booking VFS New York

Angelo booked his appointment himself on the VFS website. A few things worth knowing:

  • The booking form asks only “short stay” or “long stay”. It doesn’t ask which visa. A D7 is long stay.
  • Slots go fast. When he booked in May 2026, the earliest one was two months away.
  • Everything is presented in person, as originals. Nothing is uploaded in advance.

The last week

Before the appointment our team went through the whole file with him one more time. The fixes were small but each one mattered:

  • Fresh bank statements. Statements from the previous year don’t show your current position.
  • Funds in the Portuguese account. For a single applicant in 2026 that’s at least €11,040, a year of the minimum income.
  • Insurance start date set to match his planned arrival. A travel policy covered the visa stage. A full residents’ health plan wasn’t needed yet.
  • The cover letter re-dated, with his signature notarised.

The appointment, and the passport

The appointment itself was smooth. The staff were thorough and the wait was short.

Then the part that surprised us: he kept his passport. VFS New York didn’t hold it while the consulate decided. When the approval email came, he mailed his passport to VFS with a self-addressed return envelope, and it came back with the visa inside. That’s different from some other centres, where you hand the passport over at the appointment or collect it in person.

What’s next

With the visa approved, the next step is the AIMA appointment in Portugal for his residence permit.

If you’re applying from the US through VFS New York

  • Book early. Expect the first slot to be around two months out.
  • Get your FBI record close to the appointment, apostilled. If it expires, you can redo it from Portugal.
  • Bring originals of everything. Nothing is submitted in advance.
  • Bring recent bank statements, not last year’s.
  • Keep a self-addressed envelope in mind: you may post your passport for the visa after approval.
  • Make sure your lease is registered with the tax office.
